A union provides legal aid if you should need to fight for your licence.
The whole debate about Ryanair and union recognition is a long and protracted one, which is not something we wish to add to on this site.
Regardless of the company you work for, and regardless of what you think about Ryanair and union recognition, we feel every pilot should join their local union for one very important reason:
In these increasingly litigious times pilots can, and have, found themselves the unfortunate subject of legal proceedings. If the proceedings are taken against you in the course of your duties your company will assist and provide you with legal protection.
But what if the legal proceedings against you come from within the company?
The costs involved can be substantial, and in some cases unmanageable for an individual pilot. You could find yourself at best financially compromised, or at worst bankrupt.
If you are a member of a pilot union they are obliged to provide you with full legal advice and assistance. The peace of mind that you will not be alone is invaluable.
You have all worked hard to achieve your licences. It is your licence, not the company’s. It makes perfect sense to protect it as much as possible from every threat.
