To: UK ERC representatives
We have followed with great interest and solidarity the developments in various bases where you – the pilots – request better working conditions. We applaud the progress you have made through your courage, commitment and unity to date.
We know how difficult your task is. BALPA has successfully supported pilots organising in different companies such as easyJet and more recently Norwegian. BALPA has over 20 agreements with UK airlines, big and small. And we would like to offer our support, if you so wish, to achieve your goals, in coordination with the other pilot associations of the European Cockpit Association, across Europe. Our strength comes from the same place as your strength – pilot unity.
We can provide logistic support for such as attending meetings, strengthening your communications and providing advice.
However, we cannot take decisions for you. The demands that the EERC has set are realistic and reasonable. Proper contracts and a real negotiating structure. As with every other pilot group in our union, you have to self- organise to some extent and determine your agenda. What we have seen so far from our discussions and meetings with Ryanair pilots you are very much on your way.
However, our support is not a guarantee of success. Success will depend on many factors, but mostly on your determination, on your capacity to maintain unity, and your willingness to persevere even during the difficult times ahead. From your own experience to date, you know it will not be easy. You should be ready for Ryanair’s counter campaign. No one will be surprised by Ryanair when they offer base by base deals or talks of down turns. We have all heard this before. Thirty years of history will not be changed in one day, but your current initiative can be the beginning of a new chapter for you as a pilot body.
You also know that the conditions set or accepted by one group of pilots, whether good or bad, can impact on the future conditions of other pilot groups within your company. If you remain determined and committed, we can and will do everything in our power to support you and help you in a fight that we consider just and legitimate. Your fight is our fight. We are all in this together and it is through our overall unity as a pilot profession that we can have the greatest influence on the conditions we all must ultimately work in.
To respond effectively to your support requirements, you should contact BALPA, let us know the help you need, and give us details for how to contact you. We appreciate how quickly things are changing for you at the moment. We will respond as quickly as we can and will work with you to coordinate your efforts across the UK to ensure you can work together in the most efficient way possible.
With best regards,
BALPA General Secretary
